Dramatic Wisteria
May is the month many people wait for. Blossoms drape across the pergolas and the scent fills the space.
It’s an impressive site to see 80 wisteria plants all in bloom in the middle of the city skyline.
“The wisteria blooms for a few weeks in April/early May but this varies according to the weather,” explains Phoebe. Up here, more than 80 wisteria are trained over the steel pergola, so when they flower the whole structure becomes a canopy of blossom for three to four weeks. Late tulips and the first alliums often overlap with this, so there is still interest in the beds below.
What to look for
– Wisteria blooms hanging from the pergola, often scented on still days
– Late bulbs and early allium flowers weaving through the borders
– The shift from bare framework to fresh green as wisteria leaves come in
