March

Spring Starts

March brings the first daffodils and narcissi. Come early to catch the garden before the crowds arrive.

It’s a great time to visit with crisp fresh mornings and the start of colour coming back into the garden with narcissi.

In March, narcissi and early tulips begin to flower, while other bulbs and alliums push up fresh leaves and stems that promise more colour to come. Even on cooler days, that new growth sits clearly against the evergreen structure of the box parterres. The wisteria begins to form buds so you can see both the bare framework and what’s on the way.

Phoebe describes spring simply: “It very much depends on the temperature and how early the season starts, but new growth appears everywhere.”

What to look for;

– Narcissi beginning to bloom, often from late February into March

– Early tulips and emerging foliage from later bulbs and alliums

– Clear views and softer light before the wisteria canopy begins to leaf up

– Wisteria buds forming along the pergola
